Lex-Icon projet de Blog du 20 mars au 20 mai 2012 / Lex-Icon Blog Project from the 20th of March through the 20th of May 2012

EXPLAINER
(English version--version française ci-dessous)
Before the international conference "Lex-Icon: treating the image as text and the text as image" which will be held at the Universite de  Haute Alsace in Mulhouse, France from the 7th through the 9th of June begins, we would like to open the conference dialogue to some of the artists, authors, critics and writers of theory who are reflecting on questions central to how visual artists and writers in the 21st century are merging the domains of language and plastic arts.
To this end, there will  be daily posts between the 20th of March and the 20th of May 2012 on this blog, including single-paragraph critical writings, or mini-reviews by invited critics in English or French, as well as posts of images of new verbo-visual works by both authors and artists which will be accompanied by one-to-five line mini commentaries by the creators of these works. We are asking such questions as "Is it emphatic attention to the physical substance of language that draws authors and visual artists together today? Or are there very different modes of representation and conceptual creation engendering cultural upheavals in artistic and literary practice? How do the practices in the early 21st century of making texts to see as if they were geometric forms, or forms to read, colors and visual sequences whose nature it had once been to reach spectators and their perceptions with an inherent immediacy, differ from those of the early or mid 20th century? and Can one simply feel thought through the gaze without ever really having the words, the grammar and thus language itself to describe it? Is a process of translation from the visual to linguistic necessary for thought to take place?"  Our goal both in opening the dialogue up with this pre-conference blog project, but also of the conference, is therefore to contribute to the development of theoretical reflection regarding the effect produced by the intersemioticity of verbo-visual practices.
Please click HERE for our call for work pertinent to this blog project, as we would be excited to hear from YOU, the people reading, following and thinking about the same questions we are. And we thank you for following the blog & sharing this information on your social networking & other websites.
A mini-publication in an original format of these blog posts will be produced for the contributors and the participants of the conference, and distributed at the opening art exposition visit at 14h30 on the 7th of June 2012 at UHA. This expo is free and open to the public. Please see our PROGRAMME for full details.
